Sampler Flight: October Events

Oct 3

The approach of All Hallow’s Eve certainly isn’t scaring local breweries away from holding a freakishly large number of events throughout San Diego County in the coming months. There are far too many to illustrate the full breadth in a short-list of four, so start with the hand-picked happenings below, then proceed to the full list on our events page.

October 8 | Oktoberfest Celebration: At this point, you’ve likely indulged in multiple O-festivities, and there’s no reason not to stop now. Hit Green Flash Brewing Company’s German-themed celebration to taste three special beers, including In der Mitte Märzenfestbier and a zwickel version of Sea to Sea Lager. | Green Flash Brewing Company, 6550 Mira Mesa Boulevard, Mira Mesa, 12 p.m.

October 13 | Blahktoberfest: Don’t pack those lederhosen up just yet. Blind Lady Ale House is having the eighth annual running of its Oktoberfest celebration with keeper pints (that you can fill with their Autobefest beer) and a unique house-made offering—bratwurst pizza. | Blind Lady Ale House, 3416 Adams Avenue, Normal Heights, 11 a.m.

October 21 | BagbyFest II: Even one of the most award-winning brewers of all times knows there’s more to the beverage world than just beer. Bagby Beer Company will section its expansive brewpub into zones celebrating wine, spirits, cocktails (and, yes, beer) from numerous regions of the world along with foods to go with them. | Bagby Beer Company, 601 South Coast Highway, Oceanside, 12 p.m.

October 21 | Anniversary Events: It seems October’s a fertile month. Three breweries are celebrating birthdays on the same day: Belching Beaver Brewing (5 years, special beers galore), Iron Fist Brewing Company (7 years, special beer and live music) and Legacy Brewing Company (4 years, Oktoberfest shindig). | Belching Beaver Brewery, 1334 Rocky Point Drive, Oceanside, 3 p.m.; Iron Fist Brewing Company, 1305 Hot Springs Way, Suite 101, Vista, 12 p.m.; Legacy Brewing Company, 363 Airport Road, Oceanside, 1 p.m.

October 21 | Ye Scallywag: Kickass beer and kickass punk rock will share space on the San Diego Bayfront when 100 beers are tapped against the backdrop of live performances from Pennywise and a motley crew of musical acts including The Vandals, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and more). | Waterfront Park, 1 Park Boulevard, Downtown San Diego, 12 p.m.

July Events Sampler Flight

Jun 30

hopconWhen the summer-sun and temperatures are both high, the time is right for quenching one’s thirst for both beer and good times. There’s no shortage of either to partake in this month, so take a gander at some of these premier events, then search our full events page for even more sudsy fun in the sun.

July 20 | Hop-Con 4.0: It’s a bird, it’s a plane…no, it’s nerds of all types (but mostly the comic, sci-fi and beer variety) will descend on the outdoor portion of Stone Brewing’s Liberty Station brewpub. Some will don capes, tights, masks and other Comic-Con-esque regalia, but all will indulge in special beers (including this year’s high-ABV w00tstout), food pairings, retro-arcade games and orations from celebrity guests. | Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station, 2816 Historic Decatur Road, #116, Point Loma, 8 p.m.

July 23 | Christmas in July: The monastic theme of San Marcos’ The Lost Abbey extends to the generosity of the souls within. Each year, the brewery releases bourbon barrel-aged versions of its imperial stout, Santa’s Little Helper, pitch a “giving-tree” and hold a toy-drive benefiting underprivileged kids. Stock up on nice-insurance then visit the on-site Santa with your wish-list. | The Lost Abbey, 155 Mata Way, Suite 104, San Marcos, 11 a.m.

July 23 | Heroes Brew Craft Beer Festival: Apparently, dressing up like comic-book and blockbuster movie characters is the thing to do come July, because this is the second beer-festival (see Hop-Con above) where it’s part of the game-plan. Come ready to rid the festival site of ales and lagers from more than 40 different breweries. Then consult the true heroes—Uber drivers.  | Waterfront Park; 1600 Pacific Highway; Downtown; 2:30 p.m., General Admission: 3:30 p.m.

July 23 | San Diego Brew Fest: Six years in and this fest is still Cushing it. Forgive and (hopefully) forget this terrible pun based on the street upon which this event will take place, and head out to yet another Liberty Station-based suds rally featuring dozens of beers ranging in origin from ultra-local to international. A variety of food-trucks will be on hand to lend extra locavorian appeal. | Ingram Plaza at Liberty Station, 2640 Cushing Rd., Point Loma, 12 p.m.

July 30 | Hess Fest: Mike Hess of—you guessed it—Mike Hess Brewing Company has lots of friends in the beer-biz. Rather than horde them and their wares to himself, every year he invites them to set up tents and pour for his patrons at an epic block-party that doesn’t disappoint. Make a day of it and enjoy brews spanning from SoCal out to the Arizona Wilderness. (Get it?) | Mike Hess Brewing Company, 3812 Grim Avenue, North Park; VIP: 12:30 p.m., General Admission: 1 p.m.

June Event Sampler Flight

Jun 1

sdibgfSummer is nigh and the temps will soon be high. That’s right…IPA weather! Of course, there’s no reason to wait around to drink hoppy beers, or any beers for that matter. The following are some prime opportunities for doing just that. Check them out, then refer to our master events page for even more good times to be had in the presence of quality craft-beer.

June 4 | Anniversaries: With more than 100 breweries in San Diego County, there’s bound to be some birthday overlap here and there. Split-time or double-up with gluten-free operation Duck Foot Brewing Company as they celebrate their first year in business and Intergalactic Brewing Company, which turns three. They’re both in Miramar, so geography is your friend here! | Duck Foot Brewing Company, 8920 Kenamar Drive, Suite 210, Miramar, 12 p.m.; Intergalactic Brewing Company, 9715 Carroll Centre Road, Suite 107, Miramar, 1 p.m.

June 4 | Brew & Food Festival: So you prefer food to anniversaries. No problem. International culinary superstar Javier Plascencia is gathering a bunch of his taste buds (i.e., really good chefs) to pair their cuisine with more than 200 terrific craft-beers from breweries near and far on San Diego’s downtown bay-front, all in support of San Diego Coastkeeper. | Waterfront Park, Downtown, 1600 Pacific Highway, 2 p.m.

June 10 & 11 | More Anniversaries: What was that thing I was ranting about with birthday-overlap. Two straight weekends equals more identical anniversary dates with dueling celebrations. If you want to hit them all, head to Division 23 Brewing Company‘s one-year annie on Friday, then make it a double on Saturday with Council Brewing Company’s two-year festivities followed by Societe Brewing Company’s four-year battle of the brewers. | Council Brewing Company, 7705 Convoy Court, Kearny Mesa, Times Vary; Societe Brewing Company, 8262 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, Kearny Mesa, 12 p.m.

June 17 | Tony Gwynn 5.5K: This annual tradition pays homage to the greatest sports-hero in San Diego history while raising money to support the non-profit organization he and his wife founded to help underprivileged locals and youth facing barriers to employment, the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation. Run or walk through Beeramar, then relax with a San Diego Pale Ale .394 (or four). | AleSmith Brewing Company, 9990 AleSmith Court, Miramar, 8 a.m.

June 17-19 | San Diego International Beer Festival: It’s one of the largest international beer-festivals in the country…and you can enjoy it in tandem with the San Diego County Fair. Hundreds of beers, plus food-pairings, educational-seminars and other value-addeds await over a three days and five all-you-can-enjoy sessions. | Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Boulevard, Del Mar, Times Vary
